January 27, 2012 - Syracuse Post Standard – Syracuse firm ShoreGroup adding 200 jobs, getting $3 million in tax credits
An information technology company has committed to adding 200 high-wage jobs in Onondaga County over the next five years in exchange for state tax credits, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced today. ShoreGroup, which is headquartered in New York City, employs 113 people in Syracuse. Last summer, it was considering moving most of its local work out of state, which would have cost the Syracuse area 98 jobs.

January 17, 2012 - Detroit Free Press – U.S.-Canada border crossings increase 5%
Border crossings increased about 5% in 2011 over the previous year at 11 U.S.-Canada crossing sites, but the modest increase will do little to end debate on the need for a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor. In all, some 37.1 million cars, trucks, buses and other vehicles crossed the border at the 11 sites among Michigan and upstate New York. Passenger car traffic rose 6.6% to 30.3 million crossings, while commercial truck traffic was flat from the year before at 6.7 million crossings.

December 28, 2011 - Albany Times Union– GlobalFoundries competitor in Taiwan said to be discussing possible investment in state
U.S. Rep. Bill Owens, who represents the North Country, traveled to Taiwan on Wednesday to talk with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. officials about a possible business investment in the Empire State, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency. TSMC is the largest competitor to GlobalFoundries, the California company building a $4.6 billion computer chip factory in Saratoga County. It is unclear what investment TSMC is considering in New York. The company is one of the members of the Global 450 Consortium that will be based at the University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering. That research group, which is planning a $4 billion investment to pursue manufacturing breakthroughs, has already said it expects to create 2,500 new high-tech jobs across upstate.

November 23, 2011 - Buffalo News – Region’s jobless rate inches down to 7%
The Buffalo Niagara region’s unemployment rate slipped to 7 percent in October — its lowest level since the end of 2008—as slow but steady job growth helped keep jobless levels here well below those in the rest of the nation. The unemployment rate fell from the upwardly revised rate of 7.3 percent in September and was the lowest rate for any October since 2008, according to figures released Tuesday by the state Labor Department. It also was the lowest unemployment rate for any month since joblessness began spiking at the end of 2008.

The Central New York real estate market has seen prices drop lately, but is still far better off than some once-hot markets, and better off than the national average, according to experts and statistics. ”Syracuse is kind of faring a lot better compared to others,” said Milena Petrova, professor of finance at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. “You didn’t go quite so high and didn’t fall back as far,” said Salvatore I. Prividera Jr., director of communications for the New York State Association of Realtors. The financial crisis that rocked the nation in 2008 lead to millions of foreclosures around the country. But Central New York has been hardly touched, according to RealtyTrac Inc., a company that monitors public records. The company reports that of the 206 metropolitan areas it monitored in 2010, only four had a lower percentage of homes in foreclosure than the Syracuse area.

Five computer chip industry heavyweights said that they will invest some $4.4 billion over the next five years into developing the next two generations of computer chips and upgrading wafer manufacturing technology at plants located in upstate New York. A western New York manufacturer has added 93,000 square feet of space to its Niagara County facility and hired more than three dozen new employees. Pyrotek received $11 million in funding assistance through an award from the U.S. Department of Energy to make components for lithium batteries. The company will invest $430 million in a new, state-of-the-art facility to manufacture "green" packaging material. Empire State Development, together with a number of state and local entities, put together an incentive package to attract Norampac to expand in the Niagara Falls region. "Norampac's decision to invest and create jobs in Niagara County speaks volumes about New York state's commitment to attracting and retaining business," Governor Cuomo said. "With six Cascades facilities already in the state employing more than 800 New Yorkers, this is another example of businesses realizing the great value of investing in New York. We will continue to work to bring good jobs to New York state." Norampac owns several paper and packaging products mills in Canada and the United States. The division operates 37 facilities, four of which are in New York, including an additional plant located in Niagara Falls with 138 employees and three plants located in Lancaster, Maspeth and Schenectady. Based in Quebec, Norampac is the largest containerboard producer in Canada and has nearly 5,000 employees. The new facility will manufacture packaging materials made from recycled fiber.

he Department of Labor is reporting the strongest improvement of the economic recovery for Central New York. "We outperformed the state in terms of job growth and came much closer to the national job growth rate than we have in the past," said New York State Department of Labor Principal Economist Roger Evans. April numbers show that in the Syracuse area, jobs grew 1.1 percent compared to 0.7 percent statewide and 1.7 percent nationally. The field experiencing the largest growth is health care.

May 19, 2011 - Buffalo Business First – Buffalo private-sector job count grows
The state Department of Labor reported Thursday that Buffalo added 3,300 private-sector positions year-over-year, a gain of 0.8 percent. Nonfarm job growth, which counts the public and private sectors, was up 2,100, or 0.4 percent. Syracuse added 4,400 jobs in the private sector, or 1.7 percent. Overall, the labor department said New York state’s economy grew by 43,800 private-sector jobs, or 0.6 percent, in April 2011 on a seasonally adjusted basis. This was the state’s largest monthly increase since September 2000.

Yahoo is opening a data center in upstate New York that uses a radical new design to reduce energy costs by 40 percent, the company said Monday.
The data center in Lockport, near Niagara Falls, is cooled almost entirely by outside air that blows through the long data center halls to keep server equipment cool. That means the data center doesn't need a chiller to provide cold water for cooling, avoiding one of the most energy-intensive pieces of equipment in a traditional data center.

For the fourth consecutive month, unemployment has fallen and the number of jobs has grown in the Syracuse area in comparison with the same month last year. The state Department of Labor said Thursday the area’s unemployment rate fell slightly, to 7.6 percent in August from 7.9 percent in July. The rate in August a year ago was 7.7 percent. There were 600 more jobs in the area in August, compared with the same month a year ago. The area’s private sector gained 1,200 jobs, but government agencies employed 600 fewer people.

Rochester has retained its status as one of the healthiest metropolitan economies in the U.S., according to the Brookings Institution think tank.
Brookings has taken a quarterly pulse of the nation's 100 most populous metro areas since the first quarter of 2009. The latest report, based on this year's April-June quarter, has Rochester in the top 20, joined by Albany and Buffalo. They are the only three metros in the Northeast to make the national top 20 — and Rochester stands alone in the Northeast for making the national top 20 in all six Brookings reports.
Washington-based Brookings said Rochester continues to rate highly because employment and the housing market are stable compared with the vast majority of U.S. metro areas.

A 15-megawatt New York solar power system is in the works, reports indicate. The solar array will be installed in the town of Coxsackie. It will occupy 128 acres - and it will have a number of benefits for the Coxsackie area. For one thing, the Daily Freeman newspaper reports, between 25 and 30 construction jobs will be created during the solar plant's assembly. Five or six permanent maintenance workers will also be needed.
