The 5,882 square mile, six-county Mohawk Valley region includes the industrialized cities of Utica and Rome, along with other smaller commercial centers. The northern portion of the region is a heavily forested wilderness areas and part of New York's Adirondack Park. The mean daily temperature in the region is 19.5 F in January and 69.30 F in July

The Mohawk Valley is conveniently located near the center of the state, just west of New York's Capital District. With easy access on the New York State Thruway (I -90) to New York's interstate highway system, a Mohawk Valley location provides direct access to markets in New York State, Pennsylvania and Canada.

The service sector is the leading employer in the Mohawk Valley area, with government, trade and manufacturing also providing significant employment. Industry is concentrated in the Utica-Rome area and in smaller centers like Herkimer, Ilion, Little Falls, Gloversville, Johnstown, Amsterdam and Cobleskill. Manufacturers produce a variety of products, including electrical equipment, primary metals, leather and leather products.

Agriculture is important to the Mohawk Valley economy. The region has more than 3,400 farms, almost 10 percent of all the farms in the state.

Highways: The New York State Thruway (I-90) is the main east-west artery through the region, with additional routes providing connections to north-south interstates, I-81 and I-87, providing the area with direct access to markets in Canada, Pennsylvania, New York City and Buffalo. Interstate 88 also passes through the southern portion of the region, providing a link to Binghamton in the southwest and the state's Capital Region to the east.

Air Service: The Oneida County Airport provides connections to major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Rail Service: Conrail and the New York Susquehanna & Western provide freight service; daily Amtrak passenger service is available from Amsterdam, Rome and Utica.

Bus Service: Local bus service is available in metropolitan areas, and a number of carriers provide inter- and intrastate service.

Port Facilities: The New York State Canal System has harbor points in Rome and Utica, with smaller facilities including Little Falls, Ilion and St. Johnsville available throughout the region.

More than 26,000 students are enrolled in the region's 11 two- and four-year colleges and universities. The State University system operates five community and technical colleges in the Mohawk Valley.

The Great Sacandaga Lake and Oneida Lake are popular destinations, along with the State Canal System. Residents and visitors enjoy museums like the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica and the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, Revolutionary War historic sites, and Howe Caverns, a geologic wonder in rural Schoharie County.
