The area's comprehensive multi-modal transportation system provides access to a huge industrial market. Within a 750-mile radius of Syracuse lies about half of the combined population of the U.S. and Canada, as well as half the personal income and half of the manufacturing plants.

Central New York enjoys a very diverse economy. Although the service sector is the leading employer, the region is well represented by manufacturing industries. Among the Fortune 500 industrial firms that have facilities in the region are Chrysler, Bristol Myers-Squibb, Lockheed Martin, Carrier Corporation and Cooper Industries. Manufacturers produce a broad array of consumer and industrial products, including air conditioners, prescription drugs, electronics and medical equipment, and automotive transmissions.

Government, retail trade and transportation, communications and public utilities are major employers in the region. Dairy farming and food processing are also significant contributors to the area's economy.

Transportation BACK TO TOP

  • Highways: Major east-west access is provided by the New York State Thruway (I-90), which is bisected by Interstate 81, a major north-south artery that runs from the Canadian border south to Pennsylvania.
  • Air Service: Hancock International Airport in Syracuse is served by eight major airlines and two commuter airlines. The Oswego County Airport and many other general aviation facilities operate in the region.
  • Rail Service: Rail service is provided by Amtrak and Conrail, which operate an intermodal transfer center in Syracuse.
  • Bus Service: Greyhound and Trailways provide regular bus service. Regionally, service is provided by Centro, S&O and small, local carriers.
  • Port Facilities: The Port of Oswego provides direct access to the St. Lawrence Seaway for ocean going vessels, and the New York State Canal System can be accessed at several points in the region.

More than 60,000 students are enrolled in more than a dozen institutions of' higher education. Syracuse University ranks tenth in the nation in computer science and is home to the state’s Center for Advanced 'Technology in Computer Applications and Software Engineering. The State University of New York Health Science Center and the College of Environment Studies and Forestry conduct research in their respective fields.

Central New York's abundance of natural resources supports a year-round tourist and recreation industry. Lake Ontario, the Finger Lakes and Oneida Lake provide opportunities for a variety of, water sports. Winter weather attracts alpine and nordic skiers to the region. Art galleries, museums, winery tours, the Burnet Park Zoo and the annual State Fair are just a few of the area's many attractions.
